Community Impact

The Self-Care Initiative

TCBU barber providing a professional haircut to a young person during a community event Youth receiving grooming services at a TCBU Self-Care Initiative event TCBU community self-care program in action — barbers and young people Scholar receiving professional grooming at a TCBU self-care session

When TCBU shows up, it's more than a haircut. It's a moment where a young person sits down, feels seen, and walks away carrying something they didn't have before — confidence, connection, and the sense that someone showed up for them.

The Self-Care Initiative brings free professional grooming services directly to schools, churches, community centers, and neighborhoods across the Treasure Coast. Every visit pairs quality self-care with mentorship — because access is the entry point, not the endpoint.

Licensed professionals and IRSC cosmetology students provide every service. While young people wait, they participate in activities, conversations, and moments of connection that plant seeds for what comes next.

Feel Ready

When young people feel good about how they show up, they carry that confidence into every room — the classroom, the interview, and beyond.

Perform Better

Self-care supports attendance, focus, and classroom engagement. Showing up prepared on the outside helps a young person show up prepared on the inside.

Build Discipline

A consistent self-care routine builds self-respect — one of the strongest foundations for making better decisions throughout life.

Career Pathway

From Student to Operator

The young person getting a haircut today could be the barber-owner tomorrow. That's not a slogan — it's the pathway TCBU is building.

Through a direct collaboration with Indian River State College (IRSC), TCBU connects youth programming to a real career pipeline. IRSC cosmetology students serve as the barbers and mentors inside TCBU events — earning required training hours while providing near-peer mentorship to the young people in the chair.

The result is a self-reinforcing cycle: students gain professional experience and leadership skills. Youth gain access, confidence, and a visible example of what's possible. The community gains a pipeline that turns self-care into career readiness.

01

Access

A young person encounters TCBU through a free self-care event at their school, church, or neighborhood.

02

Mentorship

Through repeated contact, they build trust with near-peer mentors — IRSC students who came from the same community.

03

Skill & Confidence

Hands-on exposure to the craft builds capability. The P.E.P. Framework builds identity: perspective, experience, philosophy.

04

Ownership

The Operator's Blueprint curriculum — 10 modules of entrepreneurship education — prepares students to build and run their own business.

The Operator's Blueprint

Developed in collaboration with IRSC and powered by ASQ Empowerment's P.E.P. Framework, The Operator's Blueprint: From the Chair to the Business is a 10-module entrepreneurship curriculum designed specifically for aspiring barber-entrepreneurs. Students learn the Business Model Canvas, pricing strategy, branding, customer relationships, financial planning, and how to build a business that works — not just a chair that keeps them busy.

The P.E.P. Framework — Perspective, Experience, Philosophy — threads through every module, helping students connect who they are to how they build.
